Module Description: This module is designed for Erasmus and International students who wish to consolidate their competencies in English at CEFR B2 level. It will facilitate their social engagement in a new environment and enable them to participate effectively in a degree programme delivered entirely through English.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Use the English language flexibly, both in terms of receptive and productive ability, for social and academic purposes
LO2 Converse easily and spontaneously, without too much obvious searching for expressions, on a wide range of topics
LO3 Exercise key reading and writing skills sufficient for his/her needs in an academic environment - most notably in the areas of note-taking, production of assignments and exams
LO4 Implement strategies for independent study of Academic English through guided use of the ALC (Academic Learning Centre)learning environment

Introduction to the Academic Word List (AWL) Vocabulary and word building (learning word formation, prefixes and suffixes) Vocabulary and collocation (identifying common combinations of words for particular field of study) Key words and phrases in academic topic areas
Grammar
Revision of tenses.Passive voice, reporting verbs, modal verbs
Current Events
Reading, listening and discussion around topics affecting students' integration to a new social and learning environment
Lecture Skills
Identifying main and secondary points; repetition and rephrasing; taking and making notes; overcoming problems in listening to lectures
Critical thinking and independent learning skills
Exposure to self-study resources within CIT relating to assignment production and exam technique
