Module Description: This module incorporates the subject matter required for Naval Officers to exercise Command, both ashore and afloat. Students will be mentored to a level where they are prepared for senior operations appointments and capable of decision making at senior management levels, within the maritime environment
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Determine through analysis, the techniques & procedures necessary to navigate in pilotage waters in both visual and blind conditions.
LO2 Prepare & evaluate a detailed and comprehensive voyage planning for foreign deployment both in training and operational roles
LO3 Analyse the considerations necessary for coordination of a major Search And Rescue incidents, as On Scene Co-ordinator
LO4 Evaluate the considerations in utilising Nav Aids/Positioning systems world wide and analyse Naval Service capabilities of being NON dependant upon them, in operational situations
LO5 Evaluate and analyse navigation and bridge routines, including Naval Operations Command, Flotilla Inspection Staff procedures and techniques.

Naval Watch Keeping
 
Indicative Content
Pilotage
Training and, responsibilities and duties of both Commanding officer and Navigator, evaluation of techniques and use of equipment and instruments used in execution of pilotage, navigating in confined and controlled waterways.
Search and rescue
Responsibilities of On scene commander, IAMSAR and other published works on SAR guidelines, the Irish Search and Rescue organisation, relationships between statutory agencies and analyses of rendezvous problems.
Passage /voyage execution.
Planning procedures, Ocean routing information, compilation of Passage plan, climatic and weather considerations in planning, Military/ Diplomatic considerations in passage planning, innocent passage constraints.
Inspection techniques.
Standard bridge routines, Correct management of Navigation department, maintenance of records, inspection templates and formats.
Navigation in Extreme conditions.
SOLAS regulations, approaching offshore installations, ship handling in fog and heavy weather, heaving too in extreme weather
