Module Description: This module incorporates the subject matter required for naval officers to lead, organise and manage personnel both ashore and afloat. Learners will be mentored to a level where they can analyse their own leadership styles and apply best leadership and managment practices within a naval environment.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Review the command and managment structures within the Naval Service and analyse and evaluate their own roles and performance within these structures as naval officers.
LO2 Review the principles and practices of effective human resource management and deploy them in the specific role of a naval officer.
LO3 Analyse the principles and practices associated with the establishment of effective, sensitive and ethical interpersonal relationships and their application in the development of appropriate relationships with the various command levels
LO4 Evaluate and apply appropriate management styles and practice for effective management on land and at sea.

Indicative Content
Management and Leadership.
Ethics, values, attitudes. Management and Leadership styles, Modern management theory and practice, management and leadership in a naval service context, management and leadership in the role of ship’s captain.
Human resource management.
Groupwork, teamworking, interpersonal relations. Application in a naval service context. Roles: Supervision, coaching, training, mentoring and counselling. Confidentiality, boundaries.
Employment Legislation.
Legislative framework for employment. Interpretation in the context of a naval service. Extent of legitimate authority
Equality Legislation.
Equality and diversity legislation and practice. Application within a naval service. Dignity Charter
Discipline.
Theory and practice. Time management/ managing meetings.
Divisional System.
Responsibilities – Career management and welfare of subordinates, leave management and confidential performance appraisal reports.
