Module Description: This is a workplacement module and covers the STCW 95 requirements for Navigation Watch Ratings. The Learner works alongside the ship's officers on the Bridge during the voyage cycle.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Requirements

This is a work placement module which is conducted on board ship. Learners cannot proceed to sea unless they have successfully completed NAUT6035 Seafarer Basic Safety Training and possess a Seafarer Medical Certificate (ENG 11)
 
Indicative Content
Lookout duties
Reporting sounds, lights or other objects in points or degrees. Responsibilities of the lookout. Identify aids to navigation including lighthouses, beacons and buoys. Recognise distress or emergency signals. Recognise and report GMDSS alarms (and other alarms)
Helmsman
Handing over the wheel. Helm orders. Steering by magnetic compass. Steering by gyro compass. Steering with Pilot on board. Emergency steering. Changeover from automatic steering to manual and vice versa. Compass cards.
Bridge controls
Check bridge steering control equipment, communication systems and other navigation aids before leaving port. Test internal communications and alarm systems. Use correct protocol in communications with VHF/UHF radio telephones.
Distress
Operation of EPIRB and SART. Pyrotechnic distress signals. Operation of distress rockets, flares and other pyrotechnics.
Emergency exercises
Participate as a team member during an abandon ship drill, fire drill, man overboard drill.
