Module Description: |
This module provides the learner with the theoretical and practical knowledge of magnetic compasses and the necessary magnetic compensation and adjustment on board steel built vessels, gyroscopic theory and its relevence to the construction of gyro compasses and automatic pilots. Learners will gain an in-depth appreciation of the principles, accuracy and errors of electronic navigation systems including marine radar and collision avoidance systems as required by the International Maritime Organisation.

Analyse the causes and extent of the forces causing deviation to the ships compass. |

Determine the appropriate corrections to make to a ship's magnetic compass |

Apply gyroscopic theory to commercial marine gyro compasses and other appropriate marine instruments and control systems |

Evaluate the use of shipboard speed, distance and depth measurement systems |
LO5 |
Assess the use of navigation positioning systems |
LO6 |
Appraise the use of marine radar systems and associated collision avoidance systems. |

Magnetic Compass
Magnetism and the theoretical concepts of ships magnetism in the upright and heeled positions.

Compass Adjustment
Theoretical knowledge of compass adjustment and full compensation and/or tentative adjustment of a ships magnetic compass

The Gyroscopic Compass
The application of gyroscopic theory to modern commercial gyro compasses and control systems

Speed and Distance Measuring Systems
Principle of operation of speed and distance measuring systems including operational errors, and IMO specifications.

Depth Measuring Systems
Principles and operation of echo recording devices including errors and IMO specifications.
|
Electronic Position Determination Systems
Principles and operation of Position Determination Systems, both satellite and ground based, errors and limitations of such systems, IMO specifications.

Vessel Identification and Tracking Systems
Automatic Identification Systems, both short and long range, the use of such systems in vessel monitoring and tracking and in collision avoidance

Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems
IHO specifications for ECDIS, other electronic navigation charting systems, the regulations governing the managment and use of such systems

Marine Radar and ARPA
The principles of radar, range and bearing discrimination, radar range, quality of the display, errors. Automatic Radar Plotting Aids. IMO radar and ARPA specifications.
