Ports and their functions
The role of ports in international trade and transport and how ports can benefit or detract from the economic development of countries and their sea-borne trade.
|
Port Management
The rationale of port business. Port structure, the delivery of services and the relationship between infrastructure, conservancy, navigation and handling facilities.
|
Legal aspects of port management
The nature of port constitutions and the legal framework of ownership. Port laws, by-laws and national legislation. Laws relating to port security, operators liability, insurance and environmental management. Development, ownership of Free Ports and Free Zones.

Port equipment
Port buildings, transit sheds, warehouses, etc, Current and future requirements of cargo handling equipment and types to support vessel sizes.
Procurement aspects, 'Total Cost of Ownership' and 'Lifecycle costing'.
|
Port planning
The factors underpinning port development policy, having regard to both national and local requirements.
Demand planning and traffic forecasts, capacity planning of berth throughput and berth occupancy.
Port layout and physical constraints, terminal planning and support operations. Environmental factors and regulatory constraints.

Ships and Cargoes
Categorisation and scale of dry bulk cargo ships, general-purpose ships, liners (container, break-bulk and Ro-Ro) and tankers, including Ore/Oil and Ore/Bulk/Oil carriers.
