Module Description: Financial Management addresses the ways in which organisations allocate and use monetary resources over time. An understanding of financial decision making and the tools and techniques used to make the decisions for both long-term and short-term timeframes particularily relevant to Supply Management.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Describe the importance of the role of financial management in the modern institution, and identify business concepts as they relate to supply chain management
LO2 Illustrate the concept of the time value of money and use this principle and other investment appraisal techniques to evaluate various investment proposals
LO3 Evaluate the functioning of the securities markets, foreign exchange risk management, and methods for raising equity finance
LO4 Summarise the importance of xcapital structure for companies and understand the concept of cost of capital
LO5 Appraise detailed ratio analysis and working capital concepts to optimise performance

• Overview of Finance
Introduction to finance and shareholder value – What maximises shareholder value? Discussion of agency theory and ethical concerns.
• Investment Appraisal
Time value of money. Techniques for investment appraisal such as Payback, ARR, IRR, NPV – evaluation and comparison of techniques.
• Raising Equity Finance
Ordinary shares and shareholder rights, Primary Markets and IMO’s. stock markets and venture capitalists. Performance ratios such as dividend yield, EPS and PE ratios.
• Capital Structure
WACC and general introduction to theories on gearing.
• Working Capital Management
Working capital definition, Cash Management, Inventories and EOQ, Management of trade debtors.
• Ratio Analysis
Solvency ratios, Profitability ratios, Gearing ratios, Trend analysis, Limitations of Ratios.
• Foreign Exchange Risk Management
Internal v External risk management techniques. Introduction to FEC’s and Currency Options.
