Module Description: This module is designed to introduce transport management students to the Irish Legal system and to develop their awareness of legal issues relevant to transport business. Students will study the components of relevant contract and tort law and how they impact on the transport management industry together with an introduction into the court structure and sources of Irish law.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Describe the fundamental principles which govern the operation of the Irish legal system.
LO2 Identify and explain the various sources of Irish Law.
LO3 Compare and contrast civil and criminal law.
LO4 Explain the court structure and the role of legal personnel.
LO5 Illustrate the principles of the law of contract and/or tort, with particular reference to the transport industry.

Key principles of Irish Law
Introduction to legal terminology, the nature and purpose of law, relationship between law and society.
Sources of Law
The Irish Constitution, legislation, judicial precedent, European Law.
Courts and Personnel
Court structure & jurisdiction, role of Judges, Solicitors and Barristers.
Law of Tort
Principles of Liability, defences, negligence, product liability, sale of goods legislation.
