Module Description: This module examines textiles with respect to their sources, uses, sustainability and ethics. Various craft techniques explored and demonstrated. Design and construction techniques developed to create, repair and repurpose.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Identify fibres, their sources, production processes, suitability and care for application in fashion or interiors.
LO2 Adapt used textiles to new purposes, repair and upcycle textiles for continued use.
LO3 Demonstrate a variety of craft techniques.
LO4 Evaluate a fabric, garment or brand’s sustainability and debate various standings on ethical fashion.
LO5 Upcycle a garment and/or household item.

Indicative Content
Textiles.
Fibre types, sources and production methods. Fabric construction types and uses. Fabric finishes and textiles for interiors. Textile care and stain removal techniques.
Repairing, Repurposing, Recycling and Upcycling.
Various reparation and alteration techniques. Finding new uses for textiles and methods of adapting them. Application of design principles and elements.
Craft techniques.
A variety of craft techniques including but not limited to knitting, crochet, patchwork.
Sustainability and Ethical Fashion.
Exploring the effects of the fashion industry on the environment and different societies. Examining the different ethical viewpoints within the industry. This module aims to ensure sustainable consumption and production processes in line with SDG 12.
Reconstruction.
Application of repair, alteration, design, craft, embroidery and or embellishment techniques to upcycle and repurpose a garment/household item
