Module Description: This module introduces the student to human anatomy and physiology with a particular focus on understanding the human body with regards to movement and exercise.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Describe the gross anatomy of the skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
LO2 Describe human posture and movement with reference to universally accepted anatomical terminology.
LO3 Outline the role and function of upper and lower limb range of motion in human movement.
LO4 Identify major anatomical landmarks, with specific reference to those that are important for movement.
LO5 Explain the basic principles of energy metabolism and muscular contraction.

Skeletal System
Bone tissue. Functional anatomy of the upper limb and lower limbs. Anatomical terminology.
Muscular System
Anatomy of the principal skeletal muscles, including muscle origin and insertion. Basics of skeletal muscle contraction. Slow and fast twitch muscle fibres.
Cardiovascular System
Gross anatomy of the heart and related blood vessels. Constituents of blood. Basics of blood pressure.
Respiratory System
Gross anatomy of the lungs. Mechanics of breathing. Basics of external respiration.
Energy Metabolism
Basics of aerobic, anaerobic glycolytic and anaerobic PCr energy systems.
