On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO3 Investigate the contemporary sociocultural formations of ethnicity, discrimination, prejudice, racism and gender norms (Domains: 1.5, 2.3, 2.4, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.11, 5.12, 5.13, and 5.15, 5.16).

The Meaning of Culture
What is culture? Cultural representation, identity, power and ideology, cultural discourse (Domains: 5.1, 5.7, 5.14).
Cultural difference and Intercultural Awareness
'Race' and ethnicity, migration and 'border crossing', interculturalism and multiculturalism, cultural and linguistic difference, the relationship/s between cultures, dominant and 'marginal' cultures (Domains: 2.3, 2.4, 5.7, 5.11, 5.12, 5.14).
Characteristics of Cultural Studies
Cultural practices and their relation to power (subcultures). The social and political context of culture. Cultural and objective forms of knowledge. Ethical evaluation of cultural practices (Domains: 1.5, 2.2, 2.5, 5.3, 5.7, 5.13, 5.14).
Racism and Discrimination
Sociological and legal definition of discrimination and racism. Intercultural and economic racism. Political action and ethnic nationalism. Evolutionary theories of racism. Presentation of racism. Eugenics and racial typologies (Domains: 1.5, 2.2, 5.2, 5.3, 5.7, 5.13, 5.14, 5.15, 5.16).
