Module Description: This module explores the Building Control Act and principles of building codes, legislation and Universal Design relevant to Interior Architecture, and how they are applied to commercial Interior Architecture design.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Explain the impact of the Building Control Act and relevant Building Regulations and standards as part of the design process of a commercial interior architecture project.
LO2 Appraise the relevant sections of the Building Regulations Technical Guidance Documents, Part B (Fire), Part K (Stairways, Ladders, Ramps & Guards) and Part M (Access & Use), as they relate to interior architecture projects.
LO3 Implement the relevant regulations and legislation into the design of an interior architecture project.
LO4 Develop principles of Universal Design in an interior design project.

Indicative Content
Building Control Act
Awareness of the Building Control Act and the role and responsibility of the designer in conforming with the Act. Introduction to forms, procedures and general content of Fire Safety Certificate and Disability Access Certificate applications.
Principles of Building Codes & Legislation
Understanding the principles of Building Codes & Legislation for Fire, Stairs and Access, Sanitary and their impact on Interior Architecture design projects. Introduction to the principles of Universal design.
Design
Ability of the designer to explore and formulate design solutions in compliance with the relevant regulations and standards, including appropriate materials selection.
