Module Description: This skill-centred module enables keyboard students to further develop their fundamental, technical, rhythmic and stylistic performance skills through the study of more advanced Hammond organ playing. Students will develop their ability to learn independently and to critically analyse relevant repertory.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
# Learning Outcome Description
LO1 Apply complex theoretical knowledge and analytical techniques to Hammond repertoire on the organ drawing on advanced terminology and nomenclature. Also included will be the study of stylistically appropriate notated charts.
LO2 Demonstrate stylistically appropriate soloing and accompaniment instrumental skills on the organ.
LO3 Implement specific Hammond styles such as Jimmy Smith, Billy Preston, Larry Goldings, Georgie Fame, Larry Young and others.
LO4 Display versatility in performance of different musical genres on the organ and confidently embrace less familiar musical genres into their performances.
LO5 Demonstrate more advanced skills in organ articulation and phrasing through analysis and performance.

Indicative Content
Technique
Core technique will be developed and consolidated through the study of: 1. Use of the expression pedal. 2. Ballad playing. 3. Organ slides and crawls. 4. Block chord voicings. 5. Advanced chord voicings and comping. 6. Further Hammond sounds and special effects. 7. Use of the bass pedals.
Etudes
Study of a broad range of material addressing technical and stylistic challenges.
Reading
Study of stylistically appropriate notated charts. These will combine music notation and chord symbols.
Concepts of improvisation
Study of more advance scales and arpeggios, fourths playing, motivic development, common tone comping.
Repertory Engagement
Analysis of relevant repertory. This will range from jazz, gospel, funk, rock and pop genres.
