NFQ Level: Fundamental
Valid From: Semester 1 - 2023/24 ( September 2023 )
Duration: 1 Semester
Credits: 5
Field of Study: 5211 - Mechanical Engineering
Module Delivered in: 1 programme(s)
Module Description: The aim of this module is to introduce the different forms of 3D modelling using AutoCAD software. These include 3D Wireframe, Surface, Mesh and Solid models. Multiview 2D drawings and model renderings are also included.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
# Learning Outcome Description
LO1 Use task-based workspaces, co-ordinate systems (WCS and UCS) and Viewport, View, Display controls in the creation of 3D models.
LO2 Create 3D models using Wireframe, Surface, Mesh and Solid Modelling techniques.
LO3 Generate 2D multiview drawings from Solid, Surface models.
LO4 Create photorealistic renderings of Solid, Surface and Mesh models.
LO5 Undertake a CAD project incorporating the principle of sustainability.

Module Recommendations

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named MTU module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s).

Incompatible Modules
These are modules which have learning outcomes that are too similar to the learning outcomes of this module. You may not earn additional credit for the same learning and therefore you may not enrol in this module if you have successfully completed any modules in the incompatible list.
No incompatible modules listed

Requirements

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is mandatory before enrolment in this module is allowed. You may not enrol on this module if you have not acquired the learning specified in this section.

Students should be proficient in the use of 2D CAD

Indicative Content
Introduction
Use task-based workspaces, co-ordinate systems (WCS and UCS), Viewport, View, display controls and layer management.
2.5D Modelling
Add thickness property to 2D objects for 3D visual appearance.
Wireframe Modelling
Create 3D wireframe models using box and 2D extrusion methods. Apply classical faceted surfaces (2D Solid, 3D Face and Region).
Surface Modelling
Create procedural and NURBs surfaces. Apply surface edits (Fillet, Trim, Extend and Sculp).
Mesh Modelling
Create mesh models using Mesh Primitives and Mesh Surfaces (Revsurf, Edgesurf, Rulesurf and Tabsurf including Surftab 1 and 2 settings). Apply mesh edits (Extrude Split and Merge Face, Close Hole).
Solid Modelling
Create solid models using Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) and sweep operations (Extrude, Revolve, Sweep, Loft and Presspull). Apply solid edits (Taper, Extrude and Offset Faces, Fillet and Chamfer Edge, Shell).
Multiview Drawings
Create 2D drawings (including Projected, Section and Detail Views, Annotations) from 3D Models via Paper Space. Apply scale and title block edits.
Rendering
Apply lighting, shadows, environmental effects, backgrounds, materials/textures and render photorealistic image.
