Module Description: This module is designed to support the learner’s ability to reflect on their wellbeing and select appropriate strategies to promote optimum health. Learners gain an understanding of the importance of self-care as an educator. Learning is experiential in nature; therefore, regular class attendance is required to successfully complete the assessment components.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Exploring and Practicing the Pillars of a Healthy Life
Health as physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual wellbeing; recognising and managing micro stressors; understanding and valuing relaxation, healthy eating, movement, and sleep; understanding the components of habit formation and habit change; the importance of nature for healthy living and impact of nature deprivation; the power of personal connections; digital smarts.
Understanding Compassion
Exploring attributes of compassion such as care for wellbeing, sensitivity, sympathy, empathy, non-judgement, and distress tolerance; exploring the skills of a compassionate mind – compassionate reasoning, imagery, attention, sensory experience, behaviour, and feelings; cultivating compassionate thoughts and practicing compassion.
Making Sense of Life’s Challenges
Evolution of skills and interests from reptiles to mammals to humans; sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system; regulating our emotions; appreciating mixed emotions; understanding social roles and responsibilities; understanding your sense of self; acknowledging human needs; practicing self-care; understanding your thoughts; exploring emotions; building positive relationships; improving resilience; caring about wellbeing through breathwork, meditation, mindfulness, gratitude, journaling, engaging with therapists.
Self-Care as a Professional Responsibility
Personal and professional stressors; how neglected or uncontrolled stressors impact on educator’s relationships with children, colleagues, and relevant stakeholders.
Reflective and Reflexive Practice as Change-Makers
Exploring models of reflection such as Gibbs, Kolb, Schon, Atkins, and Murphy.
