Module Description: This is the first in a progressive series of skill-centered modules. It provides intensive directed study in aural skills and an auxiliary instrument (note: for keyboard players, the auxiliary instrument will be drum kit; for non keyboard players, the auxiliary instrument will be keyboard). Aural awareness is developed in a lab setting, whilst the auxiliary instrument is taught in a group lesson context.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Execute a basic etude on an auxiliary instrument
LO3 Sight-read fundamental level short passages in time, on an auxiliary instrument
LO4 Recognize, identify and sing diatonic intervals up to an octave and triads in major and minor form
LO5 Notate basic rhythmic and melodic passages

Indicative Content
Auxiliary instrumental skills
Students will acquire fundamental technical skills through the study of basic scales/rudiments (scales for keyboard studies, rudiments for drums). These technical skills will be applied to a basic etude. Additionally, simple sight reading will be addressed.
Aural skills
An introduction to basic aural skills. Students will acquire the skills to recognize, identify and sing all diatonic intervals up to an octave and triads in major and minor form. Additionally, dictational skills will be focussed on, specifically the notation of basic rhythmic and melodic passages
Aural skills continuous assessment
Students will be marked on participation and preparedness for each weekly lab.
