Module Description: This module introduces melodic minor scale harmony - the 7 modes derived from the scale and the chords derived from the modes. Additionally, students will learn how to identify natural or diatonic tensions (such as 9ths, 11ths and 13ths) off major and minor chords and transcribe a complex passage on their primary instrument.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO3 Identify by ear natural tensions off major and minor chords
LO4 Transcribe a complex passage on an instrument appropriate to his/her profile
LO5 Display advanced auxiliary instrumental skills through the performance of scales/rudiments, three etudes and a short passage of sight-reading

Indicative Content
Harmony
Melodic minor scale modes and harmony
Notation
An exploration of more complex notational devices used for rhythm section notation
Aural skills
The identification of natural tension off chords, such as 9ths 11ths and 13ths (all natural and off major and dominant chords)
Transcription
The transcription of an approved piece of music for one instrument appropriate to profile
Auxiliary instrumental skills
Advanced level auxiliary instrumental studies, requiring the preparation of three etudes, scales/rudiments and sight reading
Aural skills continuous assessment
Students will be marked on attendance and preparedness for each weekly lab
