Module Description: This module aims to build on the students knowledge and to introduce the area of adapted physical activity. Students will gain knowledge and skills to enable them to collaborate with other professionals in the planning and delivery of physical activity sessions for individuals with adaptation needs. This module incorporates a practical element where students will gain experience working in a physical activity setting where they will apply and build on their knowledge of biological sciences, human development, social and behavioural sciences with their knowledge of health and wellbeing, disease and dysfunction to deliver quality sessions for individuals from the community. A minimum of 80% attendance in lectures and tutorials and separately in practicals is required to pass this module.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Apply professional knowledge to deliver a safe adapted physical activity programme in collaboration with a service user and other professionals in line with the code of professional conduct for social care workers. (Domains: 1.2, 1.3, 1.5, 1.6, 1.10, 1.11, 1.12, 1.21, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.9, 2.12, 2.13, 2.14, 2.15, 3.7, 3.14, 5.1, 5.3, 5.10, 5.11, 5.12 and 5.16)

Core principles of exercise delivery & its relationship with health &
Benefits or physical activity. Barriers and facilitators to activity and participation. Components of fitness, and principles of training. Safety and risk management in physical activity settings. Domains (3.7; 5.4; 5.11; 5.16)
Human motor development
Human motor development throughout the lifespan and links with social and cognitive development. Factors that affect development. Developmental motor delays. Critical analysis of interventions which aim to address developmental delays. Domains (5.4)
Implications of limitations on exercise programme design
Implications of structure and function limitations on exercise programme design and delivery (ACSM's guidelines for exercise testing and prescription). This will include knowledge of biological sciences (basic pathophysiology of certain conditions). Domains (3.7; 5.4).
Adapted Physical Activity philosophy, theory and opportunities.
Human rights approach to sport and physical activity participation. Reasons for adaptations and understanding of types of adaptations ranging from communication to equipment. Physical activity options and organisations in Ireland. Promoting and facilitating participation in sport and physical activity as part of the role of a social care professional (Domains:1.2, 1.3, 1.5, 1.6, 1.10; 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.9, 5.3, 5.11).
