Module Description: |
This module is designed to give the student a broad knowledge of transport regulations, current and emerging fuels and vehicle emissions associated across a broad transport industry. Students will be challenged to use acquired knowledge, research skills and telematics to gather data which reflect on current practices of a specific mode of transport. Critique of all the sourced information will be required in order to propose changes to promote financial and environmental sustainability.

Learning Outcome Description |
LO1 |
Analyse and categorize transport fuels in relation to fuel production methods, fuel systems, energy content, energy density, associated emissions and sustainability. |
LO2 |
Analyse and discuss practical steps which can be taken to promote sustainability by reduce transport costs and reduce the impact that transport has on the environment and energy consumption. |
LO3 |
Present a professional report and its associated findings based on research carried out relating to a real world transport and energy related case study. |
LO4 |
Identify and discuss the effects which current and emerging national/international transport sustainability legislation may have on both the transport and motor industries. |
LO5 |
Utilise a digital vehicle telematics system to record and analyze driver actions and vehicle performances for the purpose of producing a detailed report. Use researched or recorded data to promote transport sustainability and to suggest possible improvements or changes to transport practices which can yield potential financial or environmental gains. |

Vehicle energy demands, fuel energy and combustion emissions calculations, effects of transport on the environment.

Transport legislation and directives
Euro emission standards, EU directives and regulations, Sustainable and smart mobility strategy. National & International Transport regulatory bodies. Irish Transport strategies.

Fuels & fuel production methods
Petrol, Diesel, CNG, LNG, LPG, Methanol, Biodiesel, Ethanol, Biogas, DME, Hydrogen, Electricity as a transport fuel.

Fuel characteristics and combustion related emissions
Chemical formulae, combustion process, vehicle emissions and post combustion treatment technologies (HCs NOx CO CO2 Particulate Matter),Carbon budget calculations.

Multimodal transport
Passenger travel, freight cargo, shipping, trains, buses, road transport, cycling, people / kilometre.
|
Telematics tracking Systems.
GPS systems capabilities, vehicle data analysis and reporting, fleet tracking and monitoring, vehicle asset management, remote maintenance and driver monitoring.
