Module Description: This module takes the student through the process of developing design strategies for building services systems to achieve comfort, incorporating building envelope analysis, building energy benchmarks and regulatory requirements. Peer assisted learning is used to highlight the need for interdisciplinary cooperation.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

Policies and Legislation
Including but not limited to National & European legislative environment, Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, NZEB and Passive house design, Technical Guidance Document (Part L), Irish Green Building Council, LEED and BREEAM.
HVAC
Heating, ventilation and air condition systems. Renewable technologies. Control systems and strategies.
Electricity, lighting and data systems
Power supplies and controls. Lighting design. Structured cabling.
Fire Safety
Fundamentals of fire and combustion. Fire safety legislation. Smoke management. Fire protection & control equipment.
Building analysis
Thermal transmittance and the impact of building design. Building energy benchmarks including energy & carbon emissions targets. Services space allocation and design.
