Module Description: This module will focus on how best to use the Arts and creativity as a pedagogical tool within the early childhood education and care and primary years sector. Students will devise developmentally appropriate learning opportunities/schemes of work for children from birth to three, three to six and six to twelve. Creative avenues of investigation and exploration, through the Arts will be explored using an Inquiry Based Learning Transdisciplinary approach. National Curriculum, Frameworks, Regulation and Guidelines (e.g. Aistear and Síolta/ Irish Primary Years Curriculum) will inform the structure, delivery and assessment of the module.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Attain competence within a range of Artistic disciplines in the context of Early Childhood and Primary Years Education.
LO2 Explain Inquiry Based Learning as an approach to fostering creativity in the child age ranges of birth to three, three to six, and six to twelve.
LO3 Illustrate the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for devising appropriate learning opportunities and lesson plans within the Arts.
LO4 Construct provocations to promote avenues of inquiry leading to developmentally appropriate authentic learning opportunities for children, aged birth to three, three to six and six to twelve.
LO5 Effectively communicate a knowledge and awareness of health and safety issues pertaining to the Arts in an Early Childhood and Primary Years Education context.

Inquiry Based Transdisciplinary Learning
Constructivist Learning and Theorists: Piaget, Dewey, Vygotsky and Freire; transcend traditional disciplinary/subject boundaries through the Arts; intellectual engagement; active involvement of child in learning; Inquiry as a central component in effective learning; child as inquirer; child as researcher; self initiated learning; learning through problem solving, experimentation, hypothesising, researching; child agency; iterative learning.
Creativity and Cognition
Creative-play; expression and communication; problem-solving and thinking skills; risk-taking. Imagination and originality through creative processes; employing transdisciplinary approaches to education; learning and development through experiences and environment; enabling environments and materials which result in intrinsically motivated involvement of child; appropriate questioning for learning; quality creative learning indicators.
Arts Education
Creative and Arts awareness; communication and expression; free and guided creative play; selecting appropriate provocations; exploring transient art, small world and pretend play; examining the theory of loose parts; developmentally appropriate learning targets; communicating objectives and methodologies as per an inquiry based learning transdisciplinary approach; utilising materials such as lightboxes, provocation trays and projectors effectively and efficiently; addressing social, emotional, cognitive, physical and language development; subject linkage; health and safety considerations.
