Module Description: This module provides students with a clear understanding of the importance of innovation to the success of the firm, to the economy and to society at large. Students will learn about different innovation types, how to identify and map innovation opportunities and how to manage innovation effectively within the organisation. Students will examine the link between creativity and innovation and will explore creative thinking tools and techniques such as design thinking. Students will explore how a more creative climate in the organization can be developed and sustained and how to share knowledge across organisational boundaries through open innovation. Students will be exposed to case examples from a diverse range of business sectors, speakers on innovation related topics and will collaborate on a live case study with an organisation.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Examine the role and importance of innovation to the economy and in business.
LO2 Evaluate the different innovation types and the relationship between creativity and innovation. Explore specific frameworks such as design thinking that support the creative process of idea generation, straight through to concept testing and launch.
LO3 Identify different types of innovation and explore how to map innovation opportunities using innovation frameworks. Explore the building blocks for innovation within the organisation.
LO4 Explore a structured process for managing innovation within the organisation and determine how innovation could be effectively managed in the case of an organisation based locally.
LO5 Explore open innovation through examining the role of knowledge based activities, relationships and networks in the development of a new products, processes, services or business models.
