Module Description: This module combines harmony, ear training and auxiliary instrumental studies. Harmonic analysis will show the student how to identify and notate diatonic chord progressions. The pentatonic scale and its application will be discussed along with the techniques used to notate bass and drum parts. Auxiliary instrumental skills will be developed to intermediate standard through study of scales/rudiments, studies and sight reading. Aural skills will focus on the notation by ear of diatonic chord progressions.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Notate short passages for bass and drums in a typical rhythm section chart using appropriate techniques
LO3 Notate and explain the use of pentatonic scale in popular music
LO4 Display intermediate level auxiliary instrumental skills through the performance of scales/rudiments, two etudes and a short passage of sight-reading
LO5 Notate, by ear, an intermediate level short passage of music, outlining the diatonic harmony through use of chord symbols

Indicative Content
Harmony
An exploration of diatonic chord progressions, by analyzing a piece of music and identifying the diatonic chord changes contained within
Notation
The notational devices used in charts for bass and drums
Harmony
The construction, use and theory of pentatonic scales
Auxiliary instrumental skills
Progressive study of Intermediate level auxiliary instrumental skills through appropriate scales/rudiments, sight reading and two etudes/studies
Aural skills
The notation by ear of a melodic line and the accompanying diatonic harmony. The harmony will be notated using chord symbols above the melody
Aural skills continuous assessment
Students will be marked on attendance and preparedness for each weekly lab.
