Module Description: This module introduces the concept of voice-leading in harmony. It also shows the student how to notate music for a four-part rhythm section and develops aural skills so that a short rhythm section passage can be transcribed by ear. Auxiliary instrumental skills and stylistic awareness are developed by the performance of 3 short pieces of repertory.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Demonstrate the devices used to notate a short passage for four-part popular music rhythm section
LO3 Display developed intermediate level auxiliary instrumental skills through the performance of 3 pieces of repertory, in time with a click/backing track
LO4 Inform stylistic awareness of his/her auxiliary instrument through critical analysis of appropriate recordings and the performance of 3 pieces of repertory
LO5 Notate, by ear, from a short passage of rhythm section music the parts for keyboard, guitar bass and drums

Indicative Content
Voice leading
An introduction and explanation of voice leading techniques; the semi-tone resolution of chord tone in one chord to the chord tones in another chord
Notation
The techniques used to notate an arrangement for four-part rhythm section
Auxiliary instrument
Acquisition of intermediate level auxiliary instrumental skills and development of stylistic awareness by working towards a performance of 3 pieces (ca. 2 mins each)
Ear training
The techniques used to notate by ear a short passage of rhythm section material
Aural skills continuous assessment
Students will be marked on attendance and preparedness for each weekly lab; additionally weekly skills evaluations conducted on a computer using the app EarMaster will be utilized.
