Module Description: This module examines the practical considerations of musical direction in a popular music environment with focus placed on leadership. The student arranges music for a small ensemble and after feedback from the initial submission organizes, rehearses then performs the music in a live context. Aspects of conducting as they relate to popular music performance are also examined.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Prepare arrangements of approved music for rhythm section and small ensemble (horns and/or strings)
LO3 Respond appropriately in performance to feedback received on arrangements

LO5 Display appropriate conducting and leadership skills throughout the performance

Indicative Content
Performance
The performance of submitted arrangements, implementing as appropriate any feedback received on the submission. The student's ability to lead the performance in a musically coherent fashion is examined.
Practical considerations
An exploration of the day-to-day practical considerations of an MD, such as hiring of musicians, stylistic appropriateness and complexity of the music, rehearsal technique, technical considerations such as PA, utilization of MIDI and/or tracks, lighting and preparation of venue etc
Conducting
An exploration of the modern-day conducting techniques utilized by MDs operating in a popular music milieu
Continuous assessment
Each individual student in monitored on a weekly basis. The continuous assessment mark is comprised of attendance, preparedness for and contribution to the weekly class.
