Module Description: This module aims to develop in the student an in-depth knowledge and understanding of Montessori Theory and Principles related to the education of children 9 – 12 years. A selection of educational theorists will be critically examined in relation to their contribution to both the Montessori Approach to Education and to primary education in contemporary Ireland.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO3 Appraise a variety of classroom management techniques for use in a classroom with 9-12 year olds.

LO5 Identify the contribution of leading theorists to the education process.

Indicative Content
The Montessori classroom for 9-12 year olds.
Cosmic education, classroom management, concept of freedom, prepared environment, development of intelligence, creativity and abstract concepts, needs and characteristic of the child from 9-12 years of age, classroom management techniques, primary school curriculum.
Contribution of leading theorists to the education process.
Exploration of theorists such as Bruner, Dewey, Gardiner, Vygotsky, Dweck, etc.
