Module Description: This is the sixth in a progressive series of group workshop modules. It facilitates the student’s advancing practical engagement with popular music repertory in an ensemble setting. Authentic precision across various stylistic genres is addressed through intensive directed tuition – always in the context of musical ensemble interaction. Consistent and productive independent learning is required of each student to effectively prepare for each rehearsal and performance.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Musically perform a technically and stylistically varied programme that demonstrates high levels of authenticity, precision and ensemble interaction.
LO2 Demonstrate developing leadership qualities through the example set by conscientious independent learning and communication.
LO3 Apply technical instrumental proficiency to complement the articulation of stylistic knowledge.
LO4 Integrate stylistic and technical choices to musically perform an unprepared piece at sight in time to a click within an ensemble.
LO5 Successfully perform a short improvised solo section within an ensemble.

Indicative Content
Progressive Ensemble Skills:
The progressive development of musical, technical, stylistic considerations is addressed within the context of authentic ensemble interaction - across a spectrum of musical genres. Advanced levels of instrumental proficiency are expected in order to effectively engage with notated, aural and improvised performance.
Independent Learning, Leadership & Responsibility:
Students are encouraged to lead by example - progressively managing their time, effectively streamlining daily practice routines and clearly communicating with peers – to enhance the collaborative development of each ensemble.
Continuous Assessment:
Each individual student is monitored on a weekly basis. Considerations such as attendance/ punctuality, participation/ leadership, preparedness, development of ensemble performance ability and contribution to ensemble progress are all taken into account in the context of the progressive requirements of the module.
