Module Recommendations

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named MTU module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s).

Incompatible Modules
These are modules which have learning outcomes that are too similar to the learning outcomes of this module. You may not earn additional credit for the same learning and therefore you may not enrol in this module if you have successfully completed any modules in the incompatible list.

Requirements

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is mandatory before enrolment in this module is allowed. You may not enrol on this module if you have not acquired the learning specified in this section.

This is a limited access module. Only students achieving a minimum of 65% in "Popular Instrumental Studies 4" or equivalent will be considered. Each applicant must propose their area of specialisation and give evidence of their ability to meet the requirements of the proposal. Successful access will also be subject to resource availability.

Indicative Content
Progressive Technical and Musical Skills:
This is an instrument-specific study of progressive technical skills, competence and fluency – moving toward the goal of internalising instrumental technique. The module consists of advanced instrument-specific scales, arpeggios, rudiments and transposing at sight - up/down a tone. Sight-Reading, advanced technical etude repertory, transcription and critical analysis of specific composers/musicians across varied styles and genres are also addressed.
The Developing Learner & Leader:
The student plays a more defined role in assessing his/her own progress. Regular self-assessment by the learner is used to inform realistic goal setting and efficient time management of practice and preparation. This begins the process of moving the student towards the ability to learn independently without the support offered by a third level institution. Learning to assess oneself also facilitates a shift towards learning to assess and develop others – a skill required to successfully lead a project from conception to realisation. The student’s participation and engagement with the process is monitored and developed continuously throughout the module.
Specific Performance Area:
In-depth critical analysis of leading performers/composers/artists in the chosen area(s) of specialisation - with recommended reading, listening and transcription lists provided.
Practice and Programme Preparation:
Realistic goal setting, planning and efficient time management of preparation, practice and promotion.
Continuous Assessment:
The student is monitored on a weekly basis. Considerations such as attendance/ punctuality, participation/ leadership, preparedness and specialised programme development/ technical development are all taken into account in the context of the progressive requirements of the module.
