Module Description: This module specifically looks at arranging for standard 'big-band' instrumentation i.e. rhythm section, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and 5 saxophones.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Write for horn section in open-position and close-position voicings
LO3 Apply a variety of accompaniment devices such as pads, melodic fills, riffs etc.
LO4 Direct a big-band utilising fundamental conducting techniques
LO5 Analyse a big-band score and identify the relevant elements

Arranging Devices
Study of sectional techniques and individual instrumental idiosyncrasies
Scoring
Preparation of a fully-notated big-band score and instrumental parts
Case Studies
Examination of pre-existing arrangements for big band, identifying form, harmony, texture, rhythmic devices in the styles of such artists as Maria Schneider, Gil Evans and Duke Ellington
Conducting
Employ acquired conducting skills to direct own arrangement
