Module Description: This is the first in a progressive series of group workshop modules. It facilitates the student’s active engagement with popular music repertory in an ensemble setting. It provides students with intensive directed study of the basic knowledge, skills and competencies required to function competently within a basic popular music ensemble. All students study the fundamentals of rhythm in a weekly “Sectional Workshop” class. All students also attend “Popular Music Ensemble” where they perform in a full band context.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Apply basic instrumental/vocal skills within an ensemble setting.
LO3 Display ability to listen to other musicians as a fundamental requirement of ensemble.
LO4 Satisfy the individual’s responsibility to other ensemble members through punctuality and preparation.
LO5 Successfully present a short programme of basic repertory as part an ensemble.

Indicative Content
Aural Musicianship Skills:
The ability to play by ear is introduced and developed through directed group analysis of standard recordings – the role of each instrument will be introduced within the context of appropriate repertory.
Reading:
Simple group reading etudes and lead sheets play a key role in directed rehearsals – laying the foundation for developing sight-reading ability.
Ensemble Skills:
Practical introduction of core ensemble skills including listening, musical interaction, rhythmic ability and peer collaboration.
Ensemble Programme:
Programme of suitable repertory that facilitates the developmental progress of each ensemble.
Individual Responsibility:
A shared understanding of acceptable behavior and code of interpersonal standards is discussed, implemented and monitored. Strong emphasis is placed on the individual’s responsibility to be a conscientious, punctual, considerate and active team member.
Continuous Assessment:
Each individual student is monitored on a weekly basis. Considerations such as attendance/ punctuality, participation/ interaction with peers, preparedness, development of ensemble performance ability and contribution to ensemble progress are all taken into account.
