Duration: 1 Semester
Credits: 5
Field of Study: 6210 - Agriculture
Module Delivered in: 1 programme(s)
Module Description: This module is designed to allow the learner to create an understanding of the development of respiratory diseases and scours in neo-natal calves, and of mastitis and lameness in dairy cows, which will enable the learner to assess the economic implications of both.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
# Learning Outcome Description
LO1 Analyse the implications of good health and welfare from neo-nate to adult dairy cow.
LO2 Explore the impact of respiratory disease and scours in neo-natal dairy calves
LO3 Evaluate the factors contributing to the development of mastitis and lameness in Dairy herds.
LO4 Develop a treatment response protocol to high somatic cell count and lameness in Dairy herds
LO5 Investigate the economic implications of the main calf diseases, mastitis and lameness in dairy cows at farm level.

Module Recommendations

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named MTU module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s).
