Module Description: The aim of this module is to provide students from an ECEC background with the specific practical skills and relevant knowledge to develop enterprises going forward. The parameters of this module will include the analysis of both social and commercial enterprises, experience from the 'real world' of an entrepreneur and provide an opportunity for ECEC students to create their own employment.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Critically examine the role and importance of social & commercial entrepreneurship in society, with particular reference to the Early Years Education and Care sector.
LO2 Identify the key issues involved in enterprise creation and apply criteria to identify and evaluate business opportunities.
LO3 Analyse the importance of areas related to the creation of an enterprise e.g. Finance, Marketing, Management, Operations, Funding, Time Management, Business Administration and practical knowledge of the taxation system, basic business accounts, costs & document management
LO4 Discuss business cash-flow and profitability by identifying how a business is financially structured.
LO5 Demonstrate ICT skills for business administration and financal applications in the Childcare sector.

Indicative Content
The Entrepreneur
The nature and importance of entrepreneurs, decisions, process, role in economic development, background and characteristics. Social & Commercial entrepreneurship and its contribution to society and economic development. The entrepreneur as an agent for positive change and as a creator of employment in the economy.
The Economic Environment
Understand how business is affected by the issues in the national and global economies, using PESTEL to analyse the economic environment and its impact on a start up opportunity. Explain the factors that influence competition in the sector. Business models (Public versus Private sector) & funding approaches to childcare in European economies. SWOT Analysis.
Business and Strategic planning for the ECCE Business
Introduction to the various elements of business and strategic planning to equip the students with the requisite knowledge to formulate the business plan for their own enterprise, e.g. Finance, Fundamental Marketing, Management, Operations, Funding, Time Management, performance measurement milestones, scaling & sustainability of the enterprise. Business Model Canvass.
Financial Planning & Management
Credit management; practical book keeping; introduction to spreadsheet formulas/functions; worksheets charts. Cash flow forecasts, the nature of cost & pricing, Break-Even Analysis budget requisitions and funding; principals of financial control. Outlining the various areas of compliance as expected by the reveneue commissioners
Feasibility Plan
The Feasibility Plan Definition, scope and value of feasibility, evaluation of feasibility plans, writing the feasibility plan, content of a business plan, using and implementing the business plan, why some businesses fail?
