Module Description: |
This module considers the concept of innovation in relation to the tourism industry. It examines the factors influencing change in the tourism industry; how experience with the industry impacts demand and the need for New Product/Service/Experience Development. The importance of sustainable innovation in tourism as well as enabling the transition to the digitialisation of the tourism destination and experience. An assessment of new forms of tourism will be explored. The module also aims to acquaint students with the processes, and develop the techniques, involved with ideas generation for products, services and processes, both within existing organisations as an intrapreneur or as an entrepreneur in the development of new business ventures.

Examine the trends in tourism innovation including but not limited to: regenerative; SMART; circular economy; digitialisation; interpretation; destination stewardship; slow tourism; community tourism; inclusive tourism, dark skies |

Explain the management of innovation in firms and the role of creativity in all functions throughout the organisation and the challenges of a Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) dominated industry |
LO3 |
Assess both the internal and external environmental factors which can act as barriers to innovation and change, including sustainable environmental practices and digitalisation |
LO4 |
Explain the theories and models of new product development and new service development within the tourism industry. Analyse best practice examples and innovative tourism case studies |
LO5 |
Examine the importance of experience development in tourism, the need for collaboration in destinations and the role of the consumer in co-creating the experience. |
LO6 |
Recognise the dynamic nature of the tourism industry, the continuous transformation of the tourism system and the role of technology in these developments |

Managing innovation within firms. The problems and barriers impinging on change in the tourism
