Module Description: This module considers the concept of innovation in relation to the tourism
industry. It examines the factors influencing change in the tourism
industry; how experience with the industry impacts demand and the need
for New Product/Service/Experience Development. The importance of
sustainable innovation in tourism as well as enabling the transition to the
digitialisation of the tourism destination and experience. An assessment
of new forms of tourism will be explored. The module also aims to
acquaint students with the processes, and develop the techniques,
involved with ideas generation for products, services and processes, both
within existing organisations as an intrapreneur or as an entrepreneur in
the development of new business ventures.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Examine the trends in tourism innovation including but not limited to: regenerative; SMART; circular economy; digitialisation; interpretation; destination stewardship; slow tourism; community tourism; inclusive tourism, dark skies
LO2 Explain the management of innovation in firms and the role of creativity in all functions throughout the organisation and the challenges of a Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) dominated industry
LO3 Assess both the internal and external environmental factors which can act as barriers to innovation and change, including sustainable environmental practices and digitalisation
LO4 Explain the theories and models of new product development and new service development within the tourism industry. Analyse best practice examples and innovative tourism case studies
LO5 Examine the importance of experience development in tourism, the need for collaboration in destinations and the role of the consumer in co-creating the experience.
LO6 Recognise the dynamic nature of the tourism industry, the continuous transformation of the tourism system and the role of technology in these developments

Significance of innovation in an increasingly competitive tourism industry. The role of innovation in all types of tourism organisations, its limits and applicability. Analysis of the key trends impacting on the tourism industry and the innovative solutions to address these trends
Innovation Management
Definitions; Models of Innovation; Innovation as a Management Process; Application of Innovation Management to Tourism.
Barriers to Innovation & Change Management
Managing innovation within firms. The problems and barriers impinging on change in the tourism industry. Resistance to change both internally and externally. Change management and overcoming implementation problems. Challenges of an SME dominated industry.
New Service and New Product Development
Definitions, theories and models of new product development. new service innovation - Characteristics of services, classifications of service innovations and new service development models
Tourism Experience Development
Changing consumer behaviour and demand. Understanding the process in experience development. Importance of collaboration and co-creation. Innovative storytelling and Interpretation methods to enhance the experience.
Technology and Tourism
The role of technology in tourism innovation. Service efficiency and improvements in productivity. New methods of service delivery, environmental efficiency and tourism distribution. Impacts of technology on tourism. Strengths and weaknesses associated with the use of technology in tourism businesses. Best practice and case study analysis.
