Module Description: An introduction to the principles of strategic management, specifically as it applies to the biosciences. Key strategic management tools and techniques, as well as performance measurement methods, will be covered. Students will also examine the concept of responsible practice and ethics as applied to their field of study.

Indicative Content
An introduction to Strategic Management in the Biosciences
An introduction to the importance of strategic management principles in the biosciences, including an analysis of strategy and an overview of the difference between strategic planning and strategic thinking.
Strategic Management Tools and Techniques
An introduction to the key strategic management tools, including SWOT, PEST, Porter’s Five Forces, Scenario planning and Cultural Web Analysis and an analysis of their application in an organizational context.
Performance measurement
Define and measure ‘best practice’ in an organizational context, including tools such as the Balanced Scorecard and Strategic Triangle.
Change Management
An introduction to organizational change, including a detailed overview of key change management models appropriate to the biosciences.
Leadership
A detailed overview of strategic management and operational management. An analysis of the key leadership styles and their associated strengths and weaknesses. An introduction to best practice in leadership for change management.
Ethics and responsible practice
An introduction to the importance of ethics and responsible practice in research and development, including an overview of MTU’s research ethics procedures.
