Module Description: |
This skill-centred module enables keyboard students to develop their fundamental, technical, rhythmic and stylistic performance skills through the study of Hammond organ playing. Students develop their ability to learn independently and to critically analyse relevant repertory.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to: |

LO1 |
Show awareness through practice and performance of the various ergonomics of the Hammond organ. |
LO2 |
Demonstrate their knowledge of drawbar registrations through performance on the organ and employ their suitable use in a variety of genres. |
LO3 |
Employ rhythmic accompaniments when performing on the organ that are appropriate for a variety of musical styles. |
LO4 |
Recognise a variety of Hammond clones and have an awareness of how to play authentic Hammond organ on them. |
LO5 |
Effectively apply technique and expression to a musical performance on the organ. |

Indicative Content |
Technique
Core technique will be developed and consolidated through the study of: 1. Familiarity with drawbar registrations. 2. Left hand bass. 3. Various percussive techniques. 4. Squabbling. 5. Hammond chord voicings and comping. 6. Use of the Leslie speaker. 7. Use of the expression pedal.

Etudes
Study of a broad range of material addressing technical and stylistic challenges.

Reading
Study of stylistically appropriate notated charts. These will combine music notation and chord symbols.

Concepts of improvisation
Study of fundamental scales and arpeggios, voice leading, inner movement, chord substitutions.
|
Repertory Engagement
Analysis of relevant repertory. This will range from jazz, gospel, funk, rock and pop genres.
