Describe haemopoiesis and the structure and function of the different blood cells. |
LO2 |
Outline the specimen criteria, processing and laboratory procedures used in haematology and transfusion science. |
LO3 |
Explain normal haemostasis and describe basic laboratory coagulation tests. |
LO4 |
Describe blood group antigens, antibodies and blood group serology techniques, and discuss blood donor selection, and blood component preparation. |
LO5 |
Perform core haematology laboratory and blood group serology techniques complying with Health & Safety protocols. |

Haematopoiesis
Brief introduction into blood formation and the proliferation, differentiation and maturation of blood cells.

Red Blood Cells
Erythropoiesis, red cell metabolism , red cell membrane. haemoglobin synthesis, structure and function.

White Blood Cells
Leucopoiesis,white blood cells and their structure and function.
|
Platelets
Thrombopoiesis, Platelet structure and function.
|
Collection and Handling of blood samples.
Biohazard precautions, phlebotomy, sample types and anticoagulants, the effect of storage on blood.

Reference ranges and normal values
Reference ranges, statistical procedures, normal reference values.
|
Basic Haematological Techniques
Manual and automated blood counting techniques, automated counting systems, haemoglobinometry.

Preparation and staining methods for blood films
Preparation,staining and examination of blood and bone marrow films. The role of automation staing and examining blood cells.

Blood film examination
Microscopic examination of normal blood cells.

An Introduction to Haemostasis
The components of normal haemostasis.

Investigating Haemostasis
A brief introduction to the laboratory tests used to investigate haemostasis.

An Introduction to Transfusion Science
Immune system, the immune response,immunoglobulins-structure,classes, function,clinical significance. Complement systems, blood groups- Inheritance, biochemistry, clinical and biological importance.

Techniques used in Blood Group Serology
Sensitisation, agglutination, haemolysis, factors affecting the red cell antigen antibody reaction, direct and indirect agglutination techniques, antihuman globulin reagent and antihuman globulin technique.

An Introduction to the ABO Blood Group System
History, inheritance, biochemistry, antigens and antibodies of the ABO blood group system.

An Introduction to the Rh Blood Group System
History, inheritance, biochemistry, antigens and antibodies of the Rh blood group system.

Blood Banking
Role of the National Blood Center. Donor selection, screening and laboratory testing. Blood component preparation.
