Module Description: This module builds on the skills developed in Composition 3. Through score study and workshops the learner will deepen their understanding of 21st century composition and interdisciplinary practices. They will further develop and refine their individual voice through class-based lectures and workshops. This module focusses on collaborative and interdisciplinary composition in preparation for a career as a professional composer-performer.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Compose a substantial musical work or suite of works for multiple forces that includes interdisciplinary elements and/or collaborative methods.
LO2 Exhibit compositional creativity through the creation and development of original musical ideas.
LO3 Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of contemporary compositional techniques and ideas including conceptual and theatrical approaches, interdisciplinary methods and collaborative projects
LO4 Use a variety of digital devices to create, edit and publish audiovisual documentation of creative compositional work.

Composition 3 or equivalent. The learner must submit a short project plan prior to enrolling on the module, detailing their idea for the assessment and with whom they intend to work.
 
Indicative Content
Creative analysis
Exploring contemporary approaches to creative composition through score reading and the analytical viewing of performance documentation, with particular emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches that will inform the creative composition portfolio.
Technique
Developing complex musical ideas and concepts through practice, working collaboratively and reflecting critically on creative work.
Presentation
Portfolio presentation techniques, advanced music software notation skills, the writing of an analytical and contextual commentary to accompany the composition portfolio, documenting performances using audiovisual technology.
