Module Description: |
Develop competency in building and designing SCADA systems, e.g. Windows, trends, controls, databases and communication channels to PLCs and other hardware, through a team based project.
|
Learning Outcomes |
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to: |
# |
Learning Outcome Description |
LO1 |
Develop a SCADA system and activate a physical link with a PLC and devices (e.g. power meters, sensors, motor drives, relays). |
LO2 |
Evaluate and implement available SCADA security options. |
LO3 |
Assess and evaluate how features of well-designed SCADA screens can increase productivity and efficiency and reduce errors, operator-stress and accidents. |
LO4 |
Participate in planning and managing the delivery of a SCADA system team project. |
LO5 |
Contribute to documentation and video deliverables describing the completed SCADA team project. |

Module Recommendations
This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named MTU module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s).

Incompatible Modules
These are modules which have learning outcomes that are too similar to the learning outcomes of this module. You may not earn additional credit for the same learning and therefore you may not enrol in this module if you have successfully completed any modules in the incompatible list.

Requirements
This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is mandatory before enrolment in this module is allowed. You may not enrol on this module if you have not acquired the learning specified in this section.
|
No requirements listed |
Indicative Content |
Technical Skills
Utilise SCADA software, configure the software for single user and create the physical link with a PLC, organise tag structures, activate physical link, create internal tags and external tags, test screens in runtime mode. Create multiple windows, graphics, menu buttons.
|
Security and Databases
Need for different security access-levels. Need for security against internal and external malefactors. User login features. Database size estimation. Identification of data that needs to be recorded and the required sample rate.
|
Design
Importance of good design, consideration of different operator skill levels, risk reduction, alarm handling, ease of use. Judicious choice of tag names. Awareness that others will need to edit and modify the design in the future.
|
Project Management
Skills needed for successful, timely delivery of well-designed, tested, working SCADA project. (e.g. team-level Gantt chart, effective clear communication, breakdown of deliverables, meeting minutes including action item list, log of 'billable hours')
|
Project Documentation
Uses of initial design screen sketches and process flow charts. Requirements of SCADA user guide/manual. SCADA system promotional or training video.
