Module Description: |
This module is designed to introduce the student to the theory and practice of management with particular emphasis on the management of recreation and leisure businesses. The module will cover key managerial roles of planning, decision making, organising, motivating, leading and controlling. It will examine the nature and structure of the Irish and international business environment. The theoretical principles of this subject will be supported by relevant Irish and International case studies.

Describe the history and structure of the Irish and International business environment and explain recent trends relevant to the recreation and leisure industry. |
LO2 |
Explain the basic functions of management commonly utilised in business. |
LO3 |
Compare and contrast the different leadership and motivation theories relevant to the operation of a modern recreation and leisure business |
LO4 |
Distinguish between the various legal forms of business structure and their suitability in different situations. |
LO5 |
Discuss the importance of reconciling business interests with greater social responsibility and describe how they may be incorporated into the successful management of the enterprise. |

The present structure and impact of the Irish and global Business sector on the recreation and leisure industry.

Key managerial Functions
Planning, decision making, leading, controlling and organisational structure and design.

Business Structure
Legal forms of business structure - sole trader, partnership, limited company, co-op, franchise. The consequences of the choice for the recreation and leisure entrepreneur.

Business Ethics
The philosophy of business, social responsibility, the stakeholder view, whistleblowing, ethics and strategy.

Leadership and Motivation
The application of theory X,theory Y, transactional theory, transformational theory, contingency and behavioural theory to the recreation and leisure industry
