Module Description: |
This module is designed to provide the student with expert knowledge of current employment law issues. Throughout the module, attention is focused on topical and emerging judicial and legislative developments in the area, and on the practical effects of these developments on employment law.
The module promotes critical reflection on theory and practice from an ethical and professional standpoint and provides opportunities for applied learning and continuous professional development.
Students who wish to obtain a CIPD qualification cannot pass by compensation.

LO1 |
Critically evaluate the core principles that underpin employment law as it applies in Ireland, from a common law, statutory and contractual perspective. |
LO2 |
Analyse the relationship between the different sources of Irish employment law, the various fora in which employment disputes are adjudicated upon, together with the different remedies and procedures that apply. |
LO3 |
Criticise emerging trends and developments in employment law. |
LO4 |
Apply best practice to matters of employment law. |
LO5 |
Apply research, critical analysis and problem-solving skills to resolve problems arising in employment law scenarios. |

In-depth examination of Unfair Dismissal, Constructive Dismissal, Wrongful Dismissal, Redundancy. Burden of Proof. Remedies. Defences. Significance of Fair Procedures.

Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005. Bullying and Workplace Stress. Employers Duties, Liability and Defences. Relevant Codes and Procedures.
