Module Description: This module is primarily aimed at giving students the intermediate mathematical tools required in a Lean Sigma environment. How these tools are used within a lean sigma culture is explained. The module gives a detailed treatment of the appropriate statistical techniques as applied in a modern business environment.
 
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO1 Graphically display and numerically summarise data using the methods of descriptive statistics.
LO2 Calculate measures from data and interupt results
LO3 Choose a set of one or more tools from a set of basic statistical tools, and apply the set to the analysis of optimization problems.
LO4 Conduct, analyse and interpret SIPOC, FMEA, Value Stream Mapping, and other Lean Sigma basic analysis tools.
LO5 Interpret information in relation to approaches to Lean Sigma and distinguish between different approaches to variability reduction and waste elimination.

The concept of process mapping and brainstorming.
Variation and measurement techniques
Introducing Variation and measurement techniques to identify the as-is process.
Statistical Tools
Cause and effect, FMEA and introduction to statistics are tools used to analyse the data gathered showing the extent of variation within the process we are aiming to improve, Process capability using SPC is demonstrated in a very practical way while ensuring the theory behind the statistics is understood so the techniques can be applied to any situation.
Lean concepts and tools
Background to Lean and the required basic tools. Souces of waste within the production environment. Implementation of 5S. Problem solving techniques. SIPOC & process mappping: flow charts, VSM
