Module Details

Module Code: MANU7009
Title: Lean Sigma Fundamentals
Long Title: Lean Sigma Fundamentals, Green Belt
NFQ Level: Intermediate
Valid From: Semester 1 - 2014/15 ( September 2014 )
Duration: 1 Semester
Credits: 5
Field of Study: 5400 - Manufacturing Engineering
Module Delivered in: 2 programme(s)
Module Description: The Six Sigma DMAIC and Lean Methodologies are introduced, their origins and the roles and responsibilities involved. This module demonstrates how we need to listen to the voice of the customer to sustain competitive edge in the market place and shows the effects if we don’t. This delivery scopes what is involved in selecting an area for improvement, scoping the project and selecting the appropriate stakeholder representatives in order to achieve significant process changes and results. Lean tools are introduced illustrating wastes in a process and non value adds activities that can affect productivity improvement.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
# Learning Outcome Description
LO1 Recognise process improvment opportunties
LO2 Describe and manipulate the DMAIC methodology
LO3 Predict the dynamics of teams and demonstrate leadership
LO4 Statistically analyse process data for the purpose of process improvement

Module Recommendations

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is strongly recommended before enrolment in this module. You may enrol in this module if you have not acquired the recommended learning but you will have considerable difficulty in passing (i.e. achieving the learning outcomes of) the module. While the prior learning is expressed as named MTU module(s) it also allows for learning (in another module or modules) which is equivalent to the learning specified in the named module(s).

This course is recommended for individuals responsible for resolving data based problems on a day-to-day basis and responsible for leading and working with problem solving teams. Up to 25% of the participants time will be spent leading their Green Belt Project and should be completed in a 3-month timeframe.
Incompatible Modules
These are modules which have learning outcomes that are too similar to the learning outcomes of this module. You may not earn additional credit for the same learning and therefore you may not enrol in this module if you have successfully completed any modules in the incompatible list.

Requirements

This is prior learning (or a practical skill) that is mandatory before enrolment in this module is allowed. You may not enrol on this module if you have not acquired the learning specified in this section.

No requirements listed

Indicative Content
Introduction to Lean & Six Sigma
Value of six sigma, Organisational drivers and metrics, Value-added and non-value-added activities, Reduction of variation in manufacturing, design and service within the organisation
Facilitating Project Teams
This is an extremely important module as tools alone will not enable you to run a successful project. This needs to be combined with excellent people management skills and this module hones in on the softer skills required as a good project manager. Roles in Lean Sigma.
DMAIC and Waste Identification
Overview of the DMAIC process and the wastes associated with Lean.
