Programme Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this programme the graduate will be able to demonstrate... :

# PO Domains Programme Learning Outcome
PO1 Knowledge - Breadth A Practical and theoretical knowledge in the areas of science, engineering science, technology and mathematics essential to common electrical, electronic and control maritime systems. Knowledge of design principles and methodologies common to electrical, electronic and control systems. Knowledge of codes of practice, hazards, good working practices and safe operation and maintenance associated with the maritime industry. A general knowledge of the shipping industry.
PO2 Knowledge - Kind The ability to identify, formulate, analyse and solve electrical, electronic and control system problems. Understands relevant scientific concepts including their limitations, which develop and enable abstract thinking for problem solving. Can demonstrate an understanding of the advantages and limitations of core mathematical formula and technologies used in electrical, electronic and control system design. Has knowledge of the core components used in electrical, electronic and control systems. Understands their role within the engineering team.
PO3 Skill - Range The ability to select and apply appropriate mathematical and scientific techniques to solve electrical, electronic and control problems using well described testing and drawing limited conclusions. Can use computer based engineering tools. Can plan and develop a project and use an evidence-based approach to problem solving, can present results to peers.
PO4 Skill - Selectivity The ability to select an appropriate systematic mathematical/analytical/scientific method to solve problems while understanding the accuracy of such methods when proposing solutions. Can undertake routine practical or simulated testing of systems and report and comment on results.
PO5 Competence - Context The ability to select and apply mathematical and scientific techniques to the design and maintenance of marine electrical, electronic and control systems. The graduate has an awareness of the ethical implication involved in working on the sea and can work in a safe and environmentally sound manner.
PO6 Competence - Role An awareness of the role of a multidiscipline ships team and as an individual and has the ability to work as an effective member of this team or as an individual. Can exercise independent technical judgement and has the ability to manage projects.
PO7 Competence - Learning to Learn The ability to identify gaps in their individual knowledge base and undertake continuing professional development to fill these gaps and increase personal knowledge.
PO8 Competence - Insight An understanding of the wider social, political, economic and environmental responsibilities in their role as a ships officer, in particular the need for high ethical standards with regard to people and the environment as part of the ships engineering team.
