PO1 Knowledge - Breadth 1. A comprehensive theoretical and practical understanding of Counselling and Psychotherapy to enable him/her to become a competent exponent and practitioner. 2. A coherent framework of Counselling and Psychotherapy theory to underpin his/her work with clients. 3. The required level of competence in the skills and practices of Counselling and Psychotherapy which professional practitioning requires. 4. The capability to become a reflective and skilled practitioner who has examined Counselling and Psychotherapy and him/her self in relation to Counselling and Psychotherapy to the extent that he/she will have attained the overview and skills necessary for professional practice. 5. The capability to integrate Counselling and Psychotherapy theory, Counselling and Psychotherapy skills and Personal Development towards the attainment of the required competence for professional practice.
PO2 Knowledge - Kind 1. An integrated developmental theory which is adequate to support his/her Counselling and Psychotherapy practice. 2. An integrated theory of personality which is adequate to support his/her Counselling and Psychotherapy practice. 3. An understanding of psychological function/dysfunction and an approach to assessment and diagnosis which is adequate to support his/her Counselling and Psychotherapy practice. 4. An integrated theory of therapeutic change which is adequate to support his/her Counselling and Psychotherapy practice 5. The ability to understand the different types of Counselling and Psychotherapy required by clients and actively use this understanding in the work. 6. The ability to understand the use of Counselling and Psychotherapy contracts as well as appropriate short, medium and long-term Counselling and Psychotherapy goals that are consistent with the assessment. 7. A working understanding of an adequate range of Counselling and Psychotherapy interventions to support his/her Counselling and Psychotherapy practice. 8. A working understanding of the therapeutic relationship in its various dimensions to support his/her Counselling and Psychotherapy practice. 9. The ability to understand the Counselling and Psychotherapy process and use this understanding to reflect on his/her work with clients 10. The ability to understand the ethical dimensions of Counselling and Psychotherapy and apply this understanding to his/her practice 11. PO3 Skill - Range 1. The ability to form an ongoing accurate assessment of the client’s issues and the type of Counselling required. 2. The ability to form an effective and appropriate Counselling relationship and attend to the various dimensions of the relationship which arise in the work. 3. The ability to manage the Counselling and Psychotherapy sessions effectively. 4. The ability to choose appropriate Counselling and Psychotherapy interventions 5. The ability to move appropriately along the range from supportive work to depth work according to the needs of the client. 6. The ability to observe the Counselling and Psychotherapy process as it is occurring in the session i.e. notice what is happening as it is happening in the session. 7. The ability to review and evaluate the progress of the Counselling and Psychotherapy both within the session and in the overall Counselling and Psychotherapy journey. 8. The ability to deal effectively with the Ethical and Professional Practice issues which arise in the work.
PO4 Skill - Selectivity 1. The ability to manage his/her own impulses, anxieties and inner feelings and thus remain personally grounded and contained during the work. 2. The ability to maintain a personal style which is appropriately sensitive, compassionate, warm and easy in the session thus developing effective rapport with the client. 3. The ability to remain empathic with the client while at the same time maintain his/her own separateness, independence and appropriate firmness. 4. The ability to be aware of and in contact with his/her own personal process as it occurs in the session and how it affects the work with the client. 5. The ability to take on board his/her own personal issues which arise in the work and address them in an appropriate therapeutic way. 6. The ability to take appropriate self-care in order to be personally ready for the work and to model self care for the client. 7. The ability to stay with painful issues as they arise for clients. 8. The ability to assess his/her own strengths and limitations without being too hard or too soft on him/her self. 9. The ability to receive feedback and use it in a constructive way.
PO5 Competence - Context 1. The capability of integrating his/her psychological methods and techniques into a holistic therapeutic model or plan of treatment. 2. The requisite competence to enable him/her to carry out Counselling and Psychotherapy in a structured setting with the support of supervision. 3. The requisite competence to enable him/her to carry out Counselling and Psychotherapy with a wide range of clients, issues and problems. 4. An awareness of the limits of his/her own competence and put in place appropriate arrangements for referral and backup 5. The ability to put in place arrangements for appropriate Professional Supervision to guide him/her in her Counselling/Psychotherapy work
PO6 Competence - Role 1. The ability to work alone and as a member of a team in the delivery of Counselling and Psychotherapy. 2. The ability to hold a leadership and co-ordination role in the delivery of Counselling/Psychotherapy within a professional setting.
PO7 Competence - Learning to Learn 1. The ability to pursue ongoing training and development with the understanding that the training which he/she has received will require to be continuously updated and expanded to enable him/her to keep abreast of new developments. 2. The ability to pursue specialist training which might be required to take account of the needs of a particular helping setting. 3. The ability to recognise his/her need to continue to pursue his/her own journey of self-awareness and personal development. 4. The ability to pursue opportunities for ongoing and regular professional development, particularly through the use of Professional Supervision.
PO8 Competence - Insight 1. The capability of being concerned with the suffering human being as a whole – body, mind and spirit, 2. A philosophy which aims to: - Understand, change, resolve or alleviate conditions of suffering. - Promote self-knowledge and experience of self so as to enable the individual to make better use of his/her life energy as well as his/her potential. 3. The capability of appreciating the central importance of the relationship between the client and the Counsellor/Psychotherapist 4.The capability of concerning him/her self both with the conscious material but also with the unconscious/unaware material
